How to use curtains and drapes in your interior decorating scheme in creative ways to create visual interest.

Curtains and drapes are the staple of window treatments, they’re like milk and cookies and go hand in hand. But you can use curtains and drapes in creative and unique ways that have nothing to do with windows and you'll come up with some visual interest in your home or you'll be able to hide some unsightly messes.

Curtains as Door

Okay, using curtains as a door isn’t too very creative or a novel idea, but it is a great way to hide something or provide a separation without having an actual door. This is an especially useful tip for people who are renting a home and not able to structurally change the home or even add an actual door.

Curtains and Bookshelves

Curtains can be used on bookshelves in a couple of ways. You can line the back of a bookshelf with a curtain to give it a peek-a-boo quality and tie the fabric in with your window treatments in a room. Or you can apply the curtain to the front of the bookshelf to hide a pile of kid’s toys or another mess.

Bedskirt of Curtains

Turning a curtain into a bedskirt will take a little skill, whether you cut and sew or just creatively fold and layer. But using your curtain fabric for a bedskirt instantly ties the bed into the curtains in a fun and creative way and the curtain fabric us usually a really good material for bedskirts.

Throw Pillows and Upholstery

Using curtain fabric to create no sew pillows and simple upholstering will also echo the widow treatment in the room, but be careful here because a little bit can easily be too much, especially in a small room.

Frame Matting

Using the fabric in your curtains for a matt with your artwork or photos is a great way to add some interest and color matching excitement to your framed pieces throughout the house.

Artwork

Drape a large curtain over a piece of scrap wood and secure it in place and then hang your canvas on the wall or prop it against the wall. This simple visual burst of color and pattern is very exciting and it’s your own little piece of artwork.

What clever and creative ways can you come up with to use curtains and drapes that take them away from the windows and give them new life in a different part of your home? Please comment and share your unique curtain ideas with us.
