Silver and gold, red and green; our favorite holiday decorating colors have long stood as hallmarks of the Christmas season and are far from kaput, but the 2011 holiday season is ready to embrace some new Christmas decorating trends that are sure to add a little excitement to everyone’s holiday. The holidays are a wonderful time to embrace traditions and celebrate family history but that doesn’t mean you can’t revive your Christmas tree and holiday décor with some hot new trends.
Retro Decorating
The glitz and glamour of a 1950’s or 1960’s tinsel tree or aluminum tree is back in full force with today’s modern tinsel trees or even authentic trees found at flea markets and resale shops. Taking the tree as a starting point, the rest of the décor focuses on bright colors, lots of metallics, and even some throwback ornaments. The gaudier the better when taking this approach, it’s all about bling. But a word to the wise, if you’re purchasing an original aluminum tree or a tinsel Christmas tree, be careful as they’re not as safe as the modern variety and may contain toxic and flammable materials.
The Eco-Holiday
Even for those people who are frozen into their homes in subzero weather, Mother Nature is still a very popular interior design muse. And when you think about it, it seems like you’ve already got a head start in this department with the Christmas tree itself. Collect fresh boughs and tie with simple bows or even raffia. Use colors that are inspired by natural elements, feature ornaments of holiday critters rather than inanimate objects. Bring as much living green into your home to give it a real earthy feel.
Simple Elegance
Whether this trend is inspired by the economy or a shift in attitude, simplicity has become a beautiful holiday trend for 2011. Decorate your tree in one solid color. Where you normally would have put a multitude of ornaments and decorations, opt for one and raise it on an elegant pedestal or surround it with pine boughs. Simplify the entire holiday landscape in your home and discover how elegant it feels.
Jewel Tones
Forget the red and green and go for the amped up depth of jewel tones. The benefit of using jewel tones to decorate is the depth and richness that they exude which means you can actually combine the jewel tones trend with a simple elegance trend. This trend is best executed by incorporating muted lighting or candlelight and creates a rich atmosphere and often complements some existing home décor.
