Using color at home can be intimidating and at times confusing but there are a few helpful tips and tricks for using color in interior decorating projects that can almost guarantee successful results in every situation.

Decorating Small Spaces

  • Small spaces can be tricky but using color can help to open up the space. Light or white colors on the wall can make a small room seem larger.
  • Using pops of colors in accessories and accent pieces give the room excitement and life.
  • Layer the same color in different degrees of intensity to provide depth and an even greater sense of space and visual excitement.

Decorating Large Spaces

  • Large spaces have their own series of issues using warm and dark colors can warm up the space and make it more comfortable.
  • Bold statement colors make great accent walls in large spaces creating a focal point that draws the eye inward.
  • Don’t use accent pieces in the same color throughout the room as it widens the space, instead cluster similar colored accent pieces together.

Floor to Ceiling

  • Getting a cohesive look in a room requires a complete look from floor to ceiling. The best way to accomplish this is to view colors as weight, the heavier/darker colors on the bottom, lighter colors on the ceiling and medium tone colors in the middle.
  • Painting the ceiling a dark color or the same color as the walls can make a room seem smaller and cozier, while a while color can appear to elevate the ceiling height.

Find a Color Scheme

  • Most color schemes are based on three main colors, try to balance these colors remembering that dark colors carry heavier weight and light ones are lighter. Use varying degrees of tone for interest.
  • By selecting one or more neutrals in the color scheme it’s easier and less expensive to change an accent color and adjust the room’s feel and scheme.
  • Remember that color affects mood, so select a color scheme with the particular room’s overall feel in mind.

Color Basics

  • Becoming familiar with the color wheel is good for everyone decorating a home. Colors next to each other on the wheel are considered alike and colors opposite each other are complementary. Colors that are alike go well together and in large quantities. Colors that are complementary also go well together but only in smaller doses.
  • Colors are defined as either warm or cool. Typically reds and yellows and similar shades are considered warm and greens and blues are cool, but this isn’t always the case. Warm and cool colors evoke different feelings and learning more about this can help

Don’t fear color when decorating; just use it wisely and balance it throughout the decorating scheme. Remember to think about the room’s function and intended feel when selecting colors.
