Let’s get creative! This year the economy is probably not going to get better, the weather is going to be cold and you’ll most likely be spending more time indoors. So, let’s update home interiors with some of the latest interior decorating trends for winter 2011 using our own creative interpretation.
Retro Rocks
A return to retro is almost inevitable when the economy gets bad as people reflect on the “good old days” of their childhoods. Whether these days were good or not, especially when it comes to interior design, they’re enticing a lot of people with nostalgia. The 50’s through the 70’s are currently big hits in interior decorating with the 60’s pulling more favor. Look to these colors, shapes and funky period whimsy to help you decorate your home. The best news, this can be done inexpensively if you actually take the time to shop garage sales, estate sales and resale shops you may find actual items from these eras, a bit of elbow grease and you’ve got a retro treasure.
Eco-Interiors
How can it be a trend when it’s been the “in” in interior decorating for so many years now? Well, it’s still hot and happening so stick with the eco-decorating. There are two different ways you can go when you look to add an eco bent to your interior design scheme. You can go literal and bring in elements of nature with leaf and floral prints, rock and shell collections are popular, and houseplants are making a comeback. The other way to take your eco-decorating is to go with products that are good for the environment. Some of these items are a bit more literal than others with hard wood floors but energy efficient appliances, renewable materials, and reused items are all good ways to bring eco-friendly decorating into your home.
Furniture Hacking
Speaking of reused items, there’s a whole new trend that’s gaining popularity like the hula hoop. Furniture and even accessory hacking is the artistic approach to taking one or more old pieces of furniture and repurposing them. One simple example of furniture hacking is painting an old piece, something people have done for years. But on the extreme side of the coin are people who go out and take a furniture item, cut it apart, add other elements from another piece of furniture and totally repurpose the item. An example of this is taking an old trunk, refinishing it, attaching the legs from an old coffee table and treating the finished creation as an end table. The sky’s the limit with furniture hacking and the most creative people with come up with the most wonderful results.
As you see from the winter 2011 interior decorating trends we’ve listed above, inexpensive, creative, and one-of-a-kind is going to be a huge theme in home interiors in the next year, and most likely for several years to come. While the economy is still struggling this type of decorating is going to be more popular than expensive, store bought pieces that are designed to match each other.
